Eddie Jones took time to prepare for England’s six-nation knockout tie against Ireland to pay his own homage to Shane Warne – and reveal how the spinning king brought one on to his rugby team that.
Cricket-crazed Jones coached the Wallabies between 2001-05, which led them to the 2003 World Cup final against Clive Woodward’s England team.
He recalls around that time how the Australian rugby team participated in an exchange with their high-flying cricket team.
“The Australian side when they were at the top and Warne was coming out on top,” he recalls.
“We have a guy named Wendell Sailor who is a bigger character in real life and he’s up against Stuart MacGill, who turns the other leg.
“Wendell was going in and slamming MacGill out of the net, and Warnie grabbed the ball, winked at the blobs behind and said ‘look at this.

“He gave him two floats and let Wendell smash them afterwards. Then he throws the ball a little shorter and a little faster, pitches him – then tells Wendell to go where he needs to go.
“I think it’s just an insight into such a great sports athlete. Shane is an icon, a player who has reached the heights. It was a terrible time. “
England head coach Jones added: “Shane has taken on a trade that is the opposite of what your body is supposed to do.
“He did that for a long time and became the most consistent player. He had problems off the pitch but he changed the game of cricket. “
