Man City goalkeeper Zack Steffen experienced one of the lowest moments of his career after Sadio Mane chocked on his mistake in putting Liverpool on course for the FA Cup final
Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has reached out to understudy Zack Steffen after the American’s costly mistake in the 3-2 defeat Liverpool over the weekend.
The Sky Blues were knocked out FA Cup through her First League Title contenders in an almost embarrassing way as the Reds took a 3-0 lead at half-time. After Ibrahima Konate’s header leader, Sadio Mane pounced on a moment of hesitation from substitute keeper Steffen to practically put the ball in the net.
The US international was favored by Pep Guardiola over regular Ederson, who initially left some regulars on the bench. But the Brazilian sent a message of support to his colleague after what was undoubtedly the most difficult moment of his career.
Answer to Steffens Instagram In a contribution to his own story, Ederson wrote: “A mistake in football hurts, but a goalkeeper’s mistake hurts even more. This is our life, brother. ”Steffen wrote a thought-provoking post next to a picture in which he seems to apologize.
He shared: “Trials and tribulations, failures and successes. So life is. Yesterday’s game is a hard pill, all we can do is get back up and grow from it. Thank you to all the fans who made the trip. We will work hard to make you proud. We continue.”
Was it wrong that Pep Guardiola played Steffen over Ederson against Liverpool? comment below
City coach Guardiola defended his player after the game and explained: “It was an accident. One of the strengths is trying to play [out] and as a goalkeeper he has that quality. It was an accident and he will learn for the future. When the ball is there, it can always happen. I’ve spoken to the team, not him personally, but he’s strong.”
Guardiola also played down any claims that his players looked tired at Wembley, adding: “Our momentum was there in the second half. We had chances to equalize. It was a difficult game because we came from somewhere that only we know where we came from with games that we had and the last five or six days away and people with the problems.
“The lads were very proud of the second half. It wasn’t a question of tiredness. They were even more tired in the first, football isn’t about the tiredness, it’s about what you do and how it works and how you play We finally have a day or two off, we know we have seven games and that Champions Leaguewe will try to apply pressure and see what happens.”
City remain in the hunt for Premier League and Champions League titles this season. The Sky Blues are just a single point clear of Liverpool in the league as they face off real Madrid in the semifinals of Europe.
