Mikel Arteta on summer transfer plans

Arsenal technical director Edu believes the club is primed for a “big summer” after Mikel Arteta signed a new long-term deal with the club.

It was confirmed on Friday that Arteta, whose existing contract was due to expire in 2023, had agreed to an extension until the end of the 2024/25 season. The Spaniard is nearing the end of his second full season in charge after replacing Unai Emery in mid-19/20.

Arteta quickly became a fan favorite, leading the Gunners to the FA Cup just months after being called up, beating Manchester City in the semi-finals and then Chelsea in the final.

His second season was a bit trickier and ended with Arsenal missing out on European qualification for the first time this century. However, the club proved their commitment to the former Manchester City assistant by backing him in last summer’s transfer window.

Arsenal made their biggest spend in the Premier League ahead of the new season, bringing in six players for almost £150m. And after a rocky start, that investment has paid off as the Gunners are on the verge of a Champions League return. With just four games left, they need only match or surpass Tottenham’s results and they will secure a place in the top four for the first time in the post-Arsene Wenger era.

That uptrend has now been rewarded with a new deal that Edu believes has come at a great time to give a big boost ahead of the run-in. “I think the timing is perfect,” he said. “I really think the message will be a great encouragement to everyone. To the fans, to the club, to the players, to Mikel.”

Arteta has made it clear he wants his squad to take the ‘next step’ and really fight for trophies, pointing to the importance of returning to Europe’s top flight to recruit the players they need.

“We want to take the club to the next level and really measure ourselves against the top teams,” he explained. “We have to play in the Champions League for that.

“We need to be able to develop the team, improve our players, improve all departments, connect even more with our fans, improve the atmosphere at the Emirates, be able to attract top talent and the best Recruiting people for this club pushes this project to this level.”

And Edu, who has helped oversee a remarkable turnaround in players since the end of the Emery era, has hinted there could be more changes in the coming months, adding: “It’s important to show everyone where we want to go as an association. We have another big summer ahead of us and it is important to have our manager here.”

Josh Kroenke said on behalf of him and his father Stan: “Mikel’s commitment and passion are visible to everyone. We’re confident that as we progress he’ll make us fight for the best trophies in the game again.”
