“There’s an abuser in this courtroom, but it’s not Mr. Depp. And there’s a victim of domestic abuse in this courtroom, but it’s not Mrs. Heard,” she said.

She said the evidence showed “Ms Heard was in fact the abuser”.

Depp, 58, suffered “continuous verbal, physical and emotional abuse” during their time together, the attorney said.

When the couple’s relationship ended, she caused “the greatest and worst hurt of all” by “falsifying” his name as the abuser, she said.

In one recording, Heard, 38, says: “I’m sorry I hit you… I just reacted with my foot.”

In another situation, she can be heard saying that she is “beating” Depp rather than punching him.

“I hit you… you’re fine… you’re a kid… I started a physical fight,” she says in the recording.

Ms Vasquez said this was “she heard the truth”, not one of the jurors witnessed in court.

She added that there is no recording where the Pirates of the Caribbean actor admits to hitting Heard.

“It didn’t exist. It didn’t happen,” she said.

She went on to describe Heard’s story as “a lie when it’s a lie”.

Heard claims that Depp infiltrated her with a bottle, after an alleged evening of anger and violence where he threw the bottle at her, during a trip to Australia in 2015.

In closing remarks, Ms. Vasquez said that Heard had “turned around a horror story” about the ordeal.

Attorneys say that Heard did not take pictures of her or her alleged injuries following the alleged incident and that her testimony “doesn’t add up”.

“There’s a monster in that house in Australia, but it’s not Mr. Depp. It’s Mrs. Heard.”

She told the jury that all evidence in the trial, apart from Heard’s testimony, showed that Heard attacked Depp, cutting off his finger.

“And no other woman since Miss Heard has made false statements.

“This is Me Too without any Me Too,” he said.

Mr Chew discussed Depp’s struggles with drugs and alcohol and insisted the actor “owns his flaws”.

“But he was not a violent abuser,” added Mr. Chew.

Amber Heard’s attorney, Ben Rottenborn, began his argument by asking jurors to think about the message Depp and his legal team are sending Heard and extending to his victims. domestic abuse, “if you didn’t take the picture, it wouldn’t have happened.”

He continued: “If you take pictures, they are fake. If you don’t tell your friends, you are lying. And if you tell your friends, they are part of a hoax.

“If you hadn’t sought medical treatment, you wouldn’t have been injured. If you had sought medical treatment, you’d gone mad.”

He added: “In Mr Depp’s world, you don’t leave Mr Depp. And if you do, he will start a global campaign of humiliation against you. A smear campaign…

“He will do anything to ruin your life, ruin your career.”

Rottenborn said that Depp was trying to “trick” the jury into believing he had never abused Heard once.

“It’s not a matter of whether you think Mrs. Heard might have abused Mr. Depp. It’s not,” he said.

He recalled the testimony of a couples therapist who said the couple engaged in “mutual abuse”.

He continued: “They’re trying to trick you into thinking Amber has to be perfect to win,” while also ignoring Depp’s flaws.

“Amber isn’t perfect, neither of us. She’s never pretended. And that’s not something you’re asked to decide.

“Once, ladies and gentlemen. Once. If he abuses her once, Amber wins. In fact, if he can’t prove that he hasn’t abused her once, Amber wins. “, said the lawyer.

Rottenborn took the jury through messages between Depp and his friend and actor Paul Bettany.

A message said: “Let’s burn Amber!!!” while another said: “Dump her before we burn her!!! I’ll shoot her dead after that to make sure she’s dead.”

He read another text message after Heard and Depp split, which read: “Hopefully the rotting carcass of the *** is decomposing in the trunk of the Honda Civic.”

“These words are a window into the heart and mind of America’s favorite pirate,” said Mr. Rottenborn. “This is the real Johnny Depp.”

‘Washington Post Article Doesn’t Make Depp Lose Pirate Role’

Attorney Ben Rottenborn told the jury that the first Washington Post, at the heart of the smear case, did not disqualify Depp from his role in the Pirates of the Caribbean sequel.

He said there is no evidence that Depp will be hired for the sixth film.

“Whatever he lost was the result of his own choices,” said Rottenborn.

He bought Depp’s battle with The Sun in 2020, which he lost, and has “many of the same witnesses”.

“Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time to tell Mr. Depp that this is his last chance. Tell him to get on with his life.”

“This trial is a lot more about Johnny Depp than Amber Heard. It’s about freedom of speech. Stand up for it. Defend it. And rebut Mr. Depp’s claims against Amber. “
