Elden Ring at one point let you decide who should rule Stormveil Castle after Godrick

elden ring already has a wealth of content. From its vast open world, which constantly misleads players about its actual size as it continues to expand – both above and below ground, to the sheer number of weapons, armor sets, abilities, and even characters in comparison to FromSoftware’s earlier work.

But if you’ve followed the studio’s games over the years, you’ll know that it’s very common for the community to discover unfinished levels, various pieces of content and mechanics that weren’t quite fully formed during development and disabled as a result .

Just recently, a major quest and mechanic was discovered involving getting NPCs drunk in order to get to them to loosen their tongues, which unfortunately never made the final cut.

Today, courtesy of the all-knowing modder and regular surprise purveyor of FromSoftware games, Zullie the Witch, we learn of another uncompleted quest as well. The modder and YouTuber released a video showing that players may have been able to choose the ruler of Limgrave/Stormveil Castle as Godrick the Grafted’s successor.

Godrick is of course the first Shardbearer Demigod boss Elden Ring players will encounter. Defeating Godrick awards players their first Greater Rune – one of two required to reach the end of the game. Regardless of how crucial Godrick is to the game’s progression, he is also the lord of Stormveil Castle – and virtually the entire Limgrave region.

But what happens when you defeat him? Well, it turns out that Elden Ring would have let you choose who should take the crown and succeed him as Lord of Stormveil. Zullie the Witch has uncovered a questline and unused dialogue that appears to present three NPCs – Kenneth Haight, Nepheli Loux, and Gostoc – as potential heirs. You would only have to offer the crown to one of them.

The video embedded above also reveals a curious detail. Gostoc, the gatekeeper you meet upon your arrival at Stormveil Castle, claims he is Godrick’s son and actually asks you to give him the crown. If you’ve ever returned to Godrick’s boss arena after defeating him, you might have noticed that Gostoc moved there, cursed Godrick, and stepped on his corpse.

In a previous version of the game, Gostoc’s story didn’t end here, provided you chose him as your heir. Zullie suggests that defeating Godrick once awarded players his crown as a key/quest item they could have used to advance that quest. It’s not clear if your choice of heir would have had any real consequences, but it’s an interesting idea from player agency FromSoft, who appears to have been flirted with during development.
