It turns out that the Elden Ring can be paused after all, but only on a specific menu.
FromSoftware’s Souls-like game follows in the footsteps of its predecessors, forcing gamers to find a quiet corner of the map to get out of harm’s way whenever they need some downtime motion.
But now, Youtuber IronPineapple found a way to pause the game for real. The best part? You don’t need a mod to do that – the hidden pause function is actually part of a specific menu in the game.
Essentially, this means that PC players no longer have to turn off online play to pause their games… and console players can do that too.
This feature is activated by going to your inventory, then going to the ‘Help’ screen, then selecting ‘Explain Menu’. While watching this explanation of the Inventory Menu, the game will pause – allowing you to make a cup of tea or answer the door in peace.
IGN has confirmed that this pause does indeed work in-game.
That’s a pretty lengthy way to get the game to pause – much more complicated than just hitting ‘Start’ like in old games. But while this method might not be of much help if you’re in the middle of one of the Elden Ring’s extremely difficult boss battles, it can give you a breather while traversing the Midlands.
Unfortunately, this seems to be an unintended benefit… and so it is possible that FromSoftware developer Elden Ring will patch this functionality in the future. Until then, feel free to use it whenever you need a break from the relentless assault.
IGN’s review of the Elden Ring called it “a huge repeat of what FromSoftware started with the Souls series, bringing the ever-challenging combat into an amazingly open world that allows us to be on our own. by choosing his own path.”
