With the Elden Ring finally out, eager players are surely combing every inch of FromSoftware’s new fantasy world to find writer George RR Martin’s influences. Martin, the creator of the Game of Thrones series, was famously brought into the Elden Ring to write the plot for the in-game universe.
But in a new interview with New YorkersGame director Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed that he has placed some key limitations on what Martin can do.
According to Miyazaki, Martin mainly wrote texts about world history, characters and myths of the world, including the destruction of the Elden Ring and the subsequent scattering of the fragments. While this is something we’ve learned before, Miyazaki further clarified why this is the case.
“In our game, the story should always serve the player experience,” said Miyazaki. “If [Martin] having written the game’s story, I was worried we might have to drift from there. I wanted him to be able to write freely and not feel constrained by some obscure mechanic who might have to change during development. ”
