An Elden Ring fan travels back in time 30 years by creating a Game Boy demake of FromSoftware’s open-world hit.
Twitch user shintendoTV is live streaming the game’s development, after announcing their plans in a Reddit post (below) where they said the game will be designed to work on real hardware – more likely Analogue Pocket than on an original Game Boy.
While they’re currently unsure how much of the game they’ll be recreating (since Elden Ring is really huge), Shintendo is at least hoping to make the entire opening Limgrave area.
The demake is being made in GB Studio 3.0, something Shintendo describes as “a really impressive and brand new piece of software” that is itself still in development.
This means certain features like enemy pathfinding (enemies chasing the player) aren’t available yet, but Shintendo hopes to have a playable version of Limgrave ready alongside a demo by the end of May.
The demake will feature iconic locations and characters from Elden Ring, including the Church of Elleh, where players will encounter Melina simply asking, “No maidens?”
Shintendo said on the stream that there’s “no real plan” behind the development, but they’ll just be making one tile at a time, each featuring pixel art versions of different parts of the Elden Ring.
It’s not the only FromSoftware game demake that fans of the series have created, with the Bloodborne PlayStation 1 demake being perhaps the most famous example. Developer Lilith Walther has even announced a spin-off with Bloodborne Kart.
It will be the newest wacky way for players to enjoy Elden Ring. One player, Let Me Solo Her, is endlessly challenged to battle one of the game’s toughest bosses, while a speedrunner has now beaten the game in less than seven minutes.

In our 10/10 review, IGN said, “Elden Ring is a massive iteration of what FromSoftware began with the Souls series, bringing its unrelentingly challenging combat to an incredible open world that gives us the freedom to create our own path.” Select.”
