It is official; Elden Ring is the largest company of FromSoft Steam released so far. The latest game from the iconic studio has attracted more than 750,000 concurrent Steam players – despite increasingly negative user reviews of the game thanks to its questionable PC performance.
Publisher Bandai Namco has yet to announce official sales for the game (it would easily be above 1,000,000 at launch if PC numbers alone), but we’ve seen a huge hit from just the Steam, at this point.
On launch day, Elden Ring achieved the highest concurrent player count on Steam with a whopping 764,835 players, each SteamDB. When you consider that Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice had an all-time high of 125,315 players and Dark Souls 3 had 129,975 players, you can see how amazing these numbers are on PC.
Will Elden Ring become the sixth Steam game to garner more than 1,000,000 approvals over the weekend? We’ll have to wait and see, but it looks possible.
But that’s not all good news. The game attracted a barrage of negative reviews on Steam due to its performance on PC. According to Digital Foundry, Elden Ring’s performance is a bit “mixed” right now, and that’s gentle.
For PC users, even with patch 1.02 available, stutters up to 250 milliseconds may still occur when “new effects, enemies, and areas appear on the screen. .”
The stuttering lessened as the game went on, but the “second and more common stuttering” appeared to be associated with loading new game areas because moving from one area to the next follow can cause a small one-time frame drop. At worst, there’s the “messy frame time issue” that drops the frame rate from 60 to 40.
And a quick look at the reviews on Steam (more than 7000 of them negative) shows that these performance issues aren’t lost on PC players. Still, it’s not bad enough to stop over half a million people from playing the game at the time of this writing.
