Our Elden Ring review revealed an incredible open world game full of monsters, magic and a dark but exciting atmosphere. It also detailed some incredibly difficult boss fights and, as in every FromSoftware game, a fair amount of frustrating deaths.
The realm of lands in between is vast, and there are many things that Elden Ring doesn’t tell you from the start. Whether you’re just diving into the game for the first time or just looking for some Elden Ring tips to keep you from dying so often, we’ve got you covered with a wealth of helpful guides.
Get the Summoner’s Bell and Spirit Ashes
One of the most important things to do first in Elden Ring is to get a Summoner’s Bell and some Spirit Ash. This is a great advantage in boss fights as well as normal fights that give you trouble. With these two items, you can learn how to summon spirits that can help you in battle. When you’re struggling with an enemy, having some ghost friends who can help take some of the heat off you can be a real game changer.
To get the Spirit Calling Bell for free, you need to quickly travel to the Church of Elleh shortly after receiving the torrent and learn how to level up your character. When you arrive there should be a witch in the church surrounded by fog to give you the bell. If it doesn’t, however, you’ve probably progressed too far in the story and missed your chance to get it for free. If that’s the case, you can buy a bell and wolf ashes from Roundtable Hold.
Once you’ve got your bell, you can begin your quest for more Spirit Ashes, including the Spirit Jellyfish – which is a surprisingly resilient boss fight buddy.
Level up fast with Rune Farming
Despite some very difficult boss fights, this game is an RPG that allows you to gain strength elsewhere. Just because you can’t defeat an enemy right now or one of the many Elden Ring bosses doesn’t mean you have to bang your head against the wall, you just have to go to another area and keep building your character. However, if you don’t want to waste your time with aimless exploration, that’s where the rune farm comes in.
You can check out our guide on how to level up fast in Elden Ring, which details the best location for the rune farm early in the game. It’s all about going through a secret portal and fighting some fairly easy enemies that will net you 1,000 runes a piece.
Upgrade your weapon with Forging Stones
Leveling your character is the best way to improve your overall combat ability, but it’s not the only way. If you have enough Forgestones and Runes, you can also increase the strength of your weapons in Elden Ring.
If you’re looking for an easy way to collect these useful items, you can take a look at our guide on where to find Forgestones in the Lands Between. They can be found on random humanoid bodies in the open world, as well as in a few select locations. If you’ve got enough runes, you can also check out our guide to buying unlimited Forge Stones, which details where to find specific vendors that sell these coveted stones.
Solve the mysteries of the paintings
If you’re tired of just fighting and want to be rewarded for a bit of exploration, the open world of Elden Ring is a great way to do it. Paintings are one of the many mysteries the game has to offer, and each one you find offers a scavenger hunt that will lead you to armor and gear, as well as various other sweet rewards.
We’ve put together a guide detailing both painting locations and solutions to get you started. If you just want to know where these paintings are without spoiling your scavenger hunt, just take your eyes off the solutions in our guide.
Upgrade your sacred flasks
You start the game with a limited number of Sacred Flask uses, but it doesn’t have to stay that way. If you’re hoping to add more charges or improve your flask’s potency, you just need to find the right items. To do this you need to go outside and find Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears.
Once you’ve collected either one, just go to the next Place of Grace, select the “Bottles” option, and choose which ones you want to upgrade. Golden Seeds are used to increase each flask’s charges, and Holy Tears are used to improve the overall power of them.
Customize your flask with wondrous physics
You start the game with two flasks that will help you restore HP and FP when you need it. However, you can collect a third flask called the Flask of Wondrous Physick, which offers the ability to customize. You can find this item in the Third Church of Marika in East Limgrave.
Once you have the third bottle, all you have to do is collect Crystal Tears to be able to customize it. If you’re wondering where to find these, we’ve put together guides for the Crimson Crystal Tear, Cerulean Crystal Tear, Greenspill Crystal Tear, and Ruptured Crystal Tear.
Fight the easier bosses first
Although confronting a boss in other games requires one or a few more tries, Elden Ring bosses, especially the main bosses and dungeon bosses, can require almost countless attempts and strategy for victory. If you’re stuck and need a win to keep progressing, we recommend looking elsewhere for some of the easier fights to build up your gear and level.
Some of the less difficult fights take place with bosses scattered throughout the open world. If you’re still in the Limgrave area, some of the easiest boss fights you can undertake are with the Tibia Mariner or Bloody Finger Nejirus. You should also be able to take on the Tree Warden early in the game if you stay on your mount throughout the fight.
You can take a look at our guide all world bosses to find their locations and potential rewards.
Completely bypasses Castle Stormveil
If you’re having trouble getting past Stormveil Castle, we don’t blame you. Both Margit the Fell Omen and Godrick the Grafted are difficult bosses that are difficult to get past, despite all these tips and tricks at your disposal. If you find that you’ve already explored most of West Limgrave but still can’t get past the boss fights that the first major dungeon has to offer, you can actually bypass it entirely.
To avoid Stormveil Castle, first head north of Stormhill Shack just past Stormgate. Bear right instead of following the road where it makes a sharp left turn. This should lead you to a broken bridge that drops down a rocky path on the east edge of Stormveil Castle. Eventually you’ll reach the Lake-Facing Cliffs Site of Grace, which is the jumping-off point for exploring East Liurnia without having to conquer the dungeon.
Respect your character
Although you can choose your character class in Elden Ring, your choice quickly becomes irrelevant as you level up. However, no matter how you shape your character, there’s a good chance you’ll regret your choices later. Luckily, you don’t necessarily get stuck with the build you’ve chosen forever if you don’t want to.
You can take a look at our guide on how to respect your character if you really want to change something for the better. But just a word of warning: you must first defeat Renala, Queen of the Full Moon, in Raya Lucaria’s Academy before you can actually use this.
Activate your major runes
If you’ve managed to defeat one or more of the Shardbearer demigods in Elden Ring, you’ll find yourself with a Greater Rune that can be very useful in future boss fights. Unfortunately, just because you have a Greater Rune doesn’t mean you can use it right away. At this point it would be helpful to take a look at our guide on how to activate Greater Runes.
In order to activate your Greater Runes, you must first travel to a Divine Tower. However, once the Great Rune is restored, you will also need to find and use consumables called Rune Arcs in order to harness its powers.
