Police are continuing their investigation after 11 bodies were found in a cult temple on Sunday.

It was reported by Bangkok Post that devotees were forced to drink urine and eat excrement.

75-year-old cult leader Tawee Nanra was arrested in a raid in the Khon San district of Chaiyaphum province in north-east Thailand.

There have been complaints about an alleged cult spreading superstitious beliefs and offering non-scientific treatments for various diseases in Tambon Dong Klang.

The Phukiao provincial court on Monday set bail for Mr Tawee at 50,000 baht, or about £1,171.

However, his 62-year-old brother, Thongthip Nanra, paid the stipulated bail.

Initially, police had filed four charges against the 75-year-old for public land grabbing, violating the Medicines Act, transferring bodies and holding gatherings prohibited under the emergency ordinance.

On Tuesday, Chaiyaphum Governor Kraisorn Kongchalad announced that an inspection panel had been formed to find out how local authorities in the area were unaware of what had happened.

A demolition notice has been posted outside the compound and Mr. Kraisorn has ordered the remaining cultists to leave the compound.

Saroj Boonprom, chief of Khon San’s forest protection unit, said that the temple was originally placed in a forested area via airborne GPS.

However, this was seen as an intrusion as Mr Saroj said the investigation would take another three or four days.

Autopsies have already been performed on the 11 bodies found at the site, with their bodies set to be identified and returned to their loved ones.

The cultists believed that their leader, known as Phra Bida, or “spiritual father,” learned how to cure disease by drinking and eating his urine and excrement.

According to officials who were at the scene Monday, Mr Tawee had developed an herbal medicine called Ya Dong.

Although his recipe included adding animal hair, bones, and coconut shells.

Prime Minister and Defense Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha told Tuesday’s cabinet meeting the situation was “disgusting”.

While Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul said although Tawee’s supporters called him “phra bida”, a psychiatric hospital would simply call the guy “a patient”.
