Elite Dangerous is giving console players free copies of the game on PC

As many Elite Dangerous fans know, development on the console versions has been halted as Frontier has prioritized the PC version of the space sim. As a result, Frontier gives console fans the ability to carry their progress over to PC and makes it easier for them to dock onto the platform in free-to-play form.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Frontier would no longer support the console versions with updates and would instead focus fully on the PC version elite dangerous after the rocky start of the latest expansion last year, Odyssey. In a forum post earlier this week, Community Manager Zac Cocken laid some groundwork for those console players who want to continue playing with players without losing their progress.

Console account transfers are in the works, with the Frontier team working hard to ensure console Commanders don’t miss a beat when transferring their account to PC. If you don’t already own the space sim there, though, don’t worry: Frontier will be giving console gamers a free copy of the title on PC.

“Secondly, if you have purchased Elite Dangerous on consoles, we will give you a free copy of Elite Dangerous on PC. This will all happen in a limited time window and exact details are yet to be confirmed, but we will provide plenty of guidance to help you prepare if necessary. The team also collects the most frequently asked questions about console account transfers so we can bring you all the answers in one go.

So far the future of Elite Dangerous: Odysseythe team is still laying the groundwork for content updates and more to come this year and into 2023. Update 12, due out this month, is on the way, trying to fix issues and optimize Odyssey even more, as well as adding a new mission variant for players. As for future updates, those are currently scheduled for August and November of this year.

The team also took some time to try to allay fears that no future content was coming elite dangerous.

“I can’t say much about 2023 right now, actually I can’t say anything other than what you already know! The team is currently reviewing a key feature overhaul for 2023, and while I can’t give you any guidance on that, I hope it will help allay some concerns that there’s no more content coming to Elite Dangerous. There’s still work to be done, and the new big storytelling phase will play a role in the future as well.
