Ellen Pompeo is stepping down from her role in Grey’s Anatomy

Ellen Pompeo will star in a limited series inspired by real events and ordered from Hulu, Variety has learned.

In the untitled show, a Midwestern couple adopts an 8-year-old girl who they believe has a rare form of dwarfism. But as they begin raising her alongside their three biological children, they slowly begin to believe that she may not be who she says she is. As they question their story, they face difficult questions of their own about how far they are willing to defend themselves and find themselves caught in a battle that will be fought in the tabloids, the courtroom, and ultimately their marriage.

Hulu has given the series an eight-episode contract. Katie Robbins (“The Affair,” “The Last Tycoon”) is writing and executive producing, while Pompeo is executive producing under her production banner, Calamity Jane. Erin Levy (“Mad Men,” “Counterpart”) will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Calamity Jane’s Laura Holstein will also executive produce, along with Mike Epps, Dan Spilo, Niles Kirchner and Andrew Stearn. ABC Signature is the studio, with Calamity Jane currently signing an overall deal there.

With the series order, Pompeo is expected to have a reduced on-screen role in the upcoming season 19 of the ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. Variety has confirmed that she will appear in eight episodes of the new season, but will continue to narrate each episode in addition to serving as executive producer.

Pompeo is best known for her starring role in Grey’s Anatomy, which she has starred in since 2005. As of 2017, she is considered one of the highest paid actresses in the world due to her time on the series. She is also known as her character, Dr. Meredith Grey, appeared in the spin-offs Station 19. The Hulu series is one of the few roles Pompeo has taken outside of Grey’s since the show’s debut. Her TV credits to date include Friends, Law & Order and Strangers With Candy, while her feature credits include Daredevil, Catch Me If You Can, Old School and Eternal Sunshine of the ‘ include Immaculate Spirit.’

Pompeo is represented by CAA, John Carrabino Management, The Lede Company and Hansen Jacobson. Robbins is represented by UTA, Aaron Kogan Management and attorney Jonathan Shikora. Levy is replayed by WME. Ellen Pompeo is stepping down from her role in Grey’s Anatomy
