Elon Musk claims he’s buying Manchester United: ‘Welcome’

Elon Musk tweeted that he is buying Manchester United, telling his supporters: “Welcome.”

That Tesla and SpaceX Tycoon has a history of cracking jokes and making claims about his deals that don’t pan out, so it’s unclear how serious he is.

Manchester United shares are publicly traded on the stock exchange, but the American Glazer family reportedly retains a majority stake.

The Glazers bought the legendary football team in 2005 in a controversial £790million takeover funded largely by debt dumped on the club itself.

Since then, the team have struggled to match their former sporting glory and have not won the English Premier League since the 2012/13 season. He is currently at the bottom of the table.

Mr Musk’s tweet, sent at 1am UK time on Wednesday morning when UK executives and PR staff were likely to be asleep, offered no details and was the latest in a long line of disrespectful “announcements”.

In 2018, he falsely claimed he had “secured funding” to take Tesla, his electric car company, public, resulting in him and the company being fined a total of $40 million by US financial regulators became.

However, Manchester United’s total market value of $2.1 billion is unlikely to stretch the wallet of Mr Musk, who is estimated to be the world’s richest person with a fortune of $267 billion.
