Elon Musk posted a poll on Twitter urging users to vote on whether to allow former US President Donald Trump back on the site.
Rump was permanently banned from Twitter by his previous owners in January 2021 following his followers’ attack on the US Capitol that killed several people.
The tech company said it made the decision after the Jan. 6 riots “due to the risk of further inciting violence.”
The current Twitter boss posted the poll on the page today, along with the words: “Vox Populi, Vox Dei” – a Latin expression meaning “the voice of the people is the voice of God”.
With over nine million people taking part in the poll, 52.5 percent of voters support Trump’s reinstatement, while 47.5 percent do not.
In May, Musk said he would reverse Trump’s ban if he took control of the social media site.
He said at the time: “Permanent bans should be extremely rare and should be reserved for accounts that are bots or spam, scam accounts. I don’t think it was right to ban Donald Trump.”
At the time of his ban, Mr Trump had more than 80 million followers on the platform.
This follows speculation over the past few days that Twitter is nearing its demise as Musk continues to make big changes to the platform.
Yesterday, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar confirmed that around 140 jobs will be cut from Twitter after his department was notified of the cuts by the social media company. Twitter employs 500 people in Ireland.
“It’s about 140 redundancies, of course my thoughts are with the staff affected, there’s about a third of the Dublin workforce being made redundant and they can be sure they’ll get a lot of government help,” Varadkar said.
He said there was no indication at this point that there would be any further job losses at Twitter.
