ELON Musk announced in a filing Monday that he will become Twitter’s chief executive officer after acquiring the company for $44 billion.
The move comes after the Tesla and SpaceX CEO fired former Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal and other senior officials last week.
The billionaire changed his Twitter bio to “Chief Twit” in a subtle nod to the business decision.
He later changed it to “Twitter Complaints Line Operator”.
After ending a months-long legal battle, Musk took over the social media company last week and made quick changes.
All previous members of Twitter’s board of directors no longer have authority, according to an SEC filing.
It’s unclear why Musk decided to get rid of the Twitter board.
Musk has been rumored to be planning downsizing and letting controversial former users back onto the platform.
Responding to a link posted by a Twitter user, Musk called for his decision to dissolve the Twitter board. Write: “This is only temporary.”
He also wants to bill Twitter users for the coveted blue tick as part of sweeping changes since becoming the new owner.
Corresponding The edgeMusk, 51, has ordered his staff to make the blue tick a perk within Twitter’s existing premium offering, Twitter Blue.
The optional tier currently costs $4.99, but apparently he’s pushing to increase it to $19.99.
Musk has reportedly warned employees they have until November 7 to make the big change or they will be fired.
Musk has already publicly teased that “the entire verification process is in the process of being overhauled.”
The billionaire revealed some details about his plans for Twitter in a tweet he posted following his acquisition last week.
He addressed his message to “Twitter advertisers”, but should also be of interest to normal Twitter users.
It said: “I wanted to reach out to you personally to share my motivation for taking over Twitter.
“There has been a lot of speculation about why I bought Twitter and what I think about advertising. Most of it was wrong.”
He continued, “The reason I acquired Twitter is because it is important to the future of civilization to have a shared digital city square where a wide range of beliefs can be discussed in a healthy way, without resorting to violence to fall back.
“Currently, there is a great danger that social media will splinter into right-wing extremist and left-wing extremist echo chambers, which will generate even more hate and divide our society.”
He goes on to criticize “traditional media” and says a “relentless pursuit of clicks” is extremely polarizing among Twitter users.
He said: “That’s why I bought Twitter. I didn’t do it because it would be easy.
“I didn’t do it to make more money. I did it to help humanity I love.
“And I do so with humility, recognizing that failure in pursuit of this goal, despite our best efforts, is a very real possibility.”
Musk qualified that he would not let Twitter become a “hellscape for everyone”.
He said users will still face consequences and will be able to set preferences for what they want to see.
