Elon Musk has told employees they must commit to a new “hardcore” Twitter or he will fire them.
In an email sent to Irish employees this morning and seen by Independent.ie, Musk warned that the company would go “extremely hardcore” going forward.
“This means working long hours at high intensity,” he said. “Only exceptional performance justifies a passing grade.”
Staff have been told to click a ‘yes’ link to commit to the new company, with Irish staff committing by 10pm tomorrow. If they don’t sign the pledge, they’ll be fired with three months’ salary, the email threatened.
Musk wrote: “In order to build a groundbreaking Twitter 2.0 in the future and thrive in an increasingly competitive world, we must be extremely persistent.
“This means working long hours at high intensity. Only extraordinary achievements justify a passing grade.”
He said Twitter will be much more engineering-centric. “Design and product management will still be very important and will report to me, but those who write great code will make up the majority of our team and have the greatest impact,” he wrote.
“Twitter is a software and server company at its core, so I think that makes sense.
“If you are sure you want to be part of the new Twitter, please click Yes on the link below. Anyone who has not done so by 5pm ET (10pm Irish time) tomorrow, Thursday, will receive three months’ severance pay.”
An Irish worker, who asked not to be identified, said workers in Dublin got the message at 8am.
She said she is speaking to unions and lawyers.
Twitter employs around 500 people at its European headquarters in Dublin’s Cumberland Place office.
