Fábio Faria, Brazil’s communications minister, welcomed Mr Musk and confirmed the topics of discussion, but gave few other details, adding only: “Let’s do it!”

It remains unclear what Mr Musk’s Amazon environmental monitoring talks with the Brazilian government will entail.

Mr Bolsonaro and Mr Musk also appeared in a live video on the President’s Facebook account, where they stood side by side on stage and answered questions from members of the audience.

“Much can be done to improve the quality of life through technology,” Mr Musk told the crowd, according to the Associated Press.

The Amazon rainforest is one of the richest areas on the planet for biodiversity and also the largest in the world. Trees are critical to slowing climate change as they absorb carbon dioxide, one of the greenhouse gases that lead to rapid global warming.

Amazon deforestation has boomed under Brazil’s right-wing president, who took office in 2019 with promises to develop the Amazon and dismissed global concerns about its destruction. Since then, Mr Bolsonaro’s government has encouraged mining, ranching and logging in the rainforest.

According to official data, deforestation in the Amazon reached a 15-year high late last year after rising 22 percent in one year. Then in January, new satellite data showed that an estimated 166 square miles of forest were cleared in one month — more than five times the number of trees for the same period last year.

The record month of deforestation came after more than 100 nations – including Brazil – pledged to halt deforestation and begin restoring the world’s forests by the end of the decade, in an agreement covering 85 percent of the world’s forests .

Mr Musk, meanwhile, has been candid about the reality of climate change and the need to drastically cut emissions to avoid the worst effects of global warming. He has called for a carbon tax, saying that cryptocurrency’s “promising future” must not come at the expense of the environment.

Musk denounced allegations that he sexually harassed a flight attendant on a private jet in 2016 as “absolutely untrue” in a news report.

Shares of the electric-car maker fell more than 10 percent on Friday amid fears that Musk’s alleged sexual misconduct and political statements could hurt Tesla’s brand and sales.

Business Insider reported Thursday that Musk’s private company SpaceX paid $250,000 in 2018 to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit from an unnamed private jet flight attendant who accused Musk of embarrassing himself to her.

The article quoted an anonymous person as saying she was a friend of the flight attendant. According to the article, the friend had made a statement as part of the private settlement process.

“I have a challenge to this liar who claims her friend saw me ‘nude’ – describe just one thing, anything at all (scars, tattoos) not known to the public. She won’t be able to because it never happened,” Musk wrote on Twitter.
