Billionaire Elon Musk said Tuesday he would step down as Twitter’s chief executive once he finds a replacement, but will continue to oversee some key areas of the social media platform.
I will step down as CEO as soon as I find someone stupid enough to take the job! After that, I will just lead the software and server teams,” Musk wrote on Twitter.
Musk’s $44 billion takeover of Twitter in October was marred by chaos and controversy, with some investors wondering if he was too distracted to also buy his electric-car automaker Tesla Inc, in which he has personal manufacturing and engineering interests to conduct properly.
This is the first time Musk has mentioned his stepping down as head of the social media platform after Twitter users voted in favor of his stepping down in a poll the billionaire launched Sunday night.
In the poll, 57.5 percent of around 17.5 million people voted “yes.”
Musk said on Sunday he would stick to the results. He did not specify a time frame for his resignation, and a successor has not yet been named.
Wall Street calls for Musk’s resignation have been mounting for weeks, and recently even Tesla bulls have questioned his focus on the social media platform and how it might distract him from running the EV maker.
Musk himself has said he has too much on his plate and is looking for a Twitter CEO.
However, he said on Sunday that there was no successor and that “nobody wants the job that can actually keep Twitter alive”.
