ELON Musk has suggested SpaceX could save the International Space Station if Russia decides to pull out – and experts have outlined a plan for how the company could make it work.
Russia is a vital part of the ISS with the technology to keep it safe in orbit.
But the 23-year collaboration is feeling the pressure from the ongoing invasion of Ukraine, which threatens the future of the ISS.
Russia’s space chief threatened allow the station to fall into the US or Russia, in response to sanctions.
Musk boldly replied to Roscosmos General Manager Dmitry Rogozin on Twitter with nothing more than a logo for his company SpaceX.
Nasa depends on Russia to send its astronauts into space, but has offered SpaceX a takeover in the future.
One of their astronauts currently on the ISS, Mark Vande Hei, faces a difficult return to Earth on March 30, aboard the incoming Russian Soyuz MS-19 spacecraft Kazakhstan.
One space expert recently tweeted a series of prototype plans for how the ISS could look and function without the Russian department attached to it.
“This is what the ISS would look like without the Russian Segment attached,” said Pete Harding, from NasaSpaceFlight.com.
“Nasa should call Rogozin bluff about his rhetoric and immediately initiate a plan to modify commercial vehicles to provide attitude control & reboost.
“Even if it’s never needed, it would be nice to have as a backup option.
“I’m not suggesting that they immediately *develop* this plan.
“I should also add that I would be very sad to see the ISS partnership end in this way after almost 25 years, but unfortunately Russia’s actions have made it unverifiable and the partners “use their abilities as tools of intimidation and intimidation is no longer true to partners.”
Musk is also helping Ukraine in the conflict, by providing more kits to access his satellite internet service. Starlink.
