Elton John and Britney Spears reunite on new dance single

Elton John and Britney Spears have worked together for the first time, creating the single ‘Hold Me Closer’, which sees the pop icons twist old sounds into something new.

The piano-heavy single uses Elton’s 1971 hit Tiny Dancer as its skeleton, adding elements from his songs The One and Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.

While Elton has released new music in recent years, including 2021’s 16-track album The Lockdown Sessions, the song represents Britney Spears’ first new music since her 2016 album Glory and her first offer since the end of her controversial conservatorship.

“She really is an icon, one of the biggest pop stars of all time and she sounds amazing on this record. I love them very much and am thrilled with what we have created together,” Elton said in a statement.

In her statement to Elton, Britney said it was an honor to be asked, saying, “I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with you and your legendary spirit.”

The track was produced by Andrew Watt, who has worked with acts such as Ed Sheeran, Eddie Vedder, Ozzy Osbourne, Justin Bieber, Post Malone and Miley Cyrus.

The song begins with both stars singing the opening lyrics of The One before moving on to Tiny Dancer.

The track is reminiscent of last year’s hit Cold Heart (PNAU Remix), which featured Elton’s songs Kiss the Bride, Rocket Man, Where’s the Shoorah? and Sacrifice into a dance track with vocals by Dua Lipa.

Elton and Britney first met at an Oscars party in 2014 and she later tweeted her love for Tiny Dancer, laying the foundation for their latest collaboration.

Elton is in the middle of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.
