Elton John has said he hopes his collaboration with Britney Spears will be a hit so it will help her regain her confidence to make more music.
The pair have released their highly anticipated duet, Hold Me Closer, which mixes their 1971 hit Tiny Dancer with their 1992 song The One, while also featuring parts of 1976’s Don’t Go Breaking My Heart are included in the track.
The single is Spears, 40,’s first new music in six years and her first musical foray into music since the 13-year conservatory years that allowed her father Jamie Spears to control her freedom and finances.
Elton John, 75, told The Guardian: “It’s hard when you’re young. Britney was broken. I was broken when I got sober. I was in a terrible place.
“I’ve been going through this broken feeling and it’s awful and thankfully I’ve been sober for 32 years and it’s the happiest I’ve ever been.
“Now I have the experience of being able to advise and help people because I don’t want to see artists in a dark place.
“You’d think a lot of artists have a lot of self-esteem, but they don’t, and that’s why we go on stage and get applause, and then we come off stage and it’s back to the beginning.”
He said the idea of working with Spears came from his husband, David Furnish.
The song follows the success of the Rocketman singer’s collaboration with Dua Lipa on their track Cold Heart (Pnau Remix), which was released last year as the lead single from Sir Elton’s 32nd studio album entitled The Lockdown Sessions.
Elton told The Guardian that Spears had to approve the music, adding: “She’s been gone for so long – there’s a lot of fear because she’s been cheated on so many times and hasn’t really been officially in the public eye for so long.
“We held her hand throughout the process and reassured her that everything will be fine.”
The singer, who has traveled the world as part of her marathon Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, added that he hopes the song “will restore her confidence to go back into the studio, make more records and recognize.” that she’s damn good.”
In an official release, Spears said: “I was so honored when the incredible Sir Elton John asked me to accompany him on one of his most iconic songs.
“We are so excited for fans to hear! Thanks Elton for having me! I am so grateful that I got the opportunity to work with you and your legendary spirit.”
In June of that year, Spears married her longtime partner Sam Asghari at her Los Angeles home in a ceremony attended by high-profile celebrity guests including Madonna, Donatella Versace, Paris Hilton, Selena Gomez and Drew Barrymore.
Spears wore a custom made off the shoulder Versace wedding dress that day.
She appeared to have deleted her Instagram account prior to the release of Hold Me Closer, but a verified Twitter account on her behalf with nearly 56 million followers remains active.
A tweet posted the day before the song was released and pinned to the top of the Twitter feed said: “Okie dokie…my first song in 6 years!!!! It’s damn cool that I’m singing with one of the most classic men of our time… @eltonofficial !!!! I’m kind of overwhelmed… it’s a big deal for me!!! I meditate more and learn that my space is valuable and precious !!!”
Fitness trainer and model Asghari, 28, shared a snippet of the song on Instagram and wrote: “Hold on proud husband! I’m going to listen to this all night!”
Commenting on his post, designer Donatella Versace said she found Britney and Elton “amazing” together, adding, “Looove the song.”
