While Airbnbs can be a cheap way to travel to dreamy places, you never know exactly what awaits you behind that door.
The majority of the properties are beautiful homes that look exactly like the photos, but there have been some horror stories over the years that travelers can get a little nervous about.
But mum Ruth Ibegbuna was absolutely furious when she arrived at her Airbnb with her young daughter to find it hadn’t been cleaned – with dirty bedding, beer bottles and filled ashtrays everywhere.
She put her daughter to sleep on the sofa and took photos as evidence of her complaint before getting to work scrubbing the apartment.
Until she realized she’d made a horrible, horrible mistake – and was forced to flee quickly before things got very, very awkward.

Ruth, from Bradford, shared the story on Twitter in a thread that has since gone viral, explaining: “I arrived in Italy late last night. Disappointed with an unlocked Airbnb that had not been cleaned/tidy after the host seemed fabulous. Meticulously took photos for feedback & started cleaning up at 1am annoyed.
“Then I realized… Wrong apartment. No. 14, not No. 16. A family home.
“I had brazenly broken into an Italian family home at 1am. With a 3 year old. Put my snoring daughter on her couch. Photographed evidence of their sloppiness (cigarettes and beer). I used her toilet.
“All without anyone waking up OR saying a word. (Probably crouch behind a door and call the police).
“Then I had to pick it up [my daughter] and try to walk quickly and quietly. Try to put the mess back in the right place. Rinse my cup. Go next door and then use google translate to write a long, whining apology to family and try to explain me. Put it under her door at 2 a.m..”

Ruth who founded the RECLAIM projectShe later explained that it was the furniture that finally triggered the realization that she was in the wrong place.
She said: “I went back to the Airbnb listing because the furniture didn’t look like it was advertised. Then I realized we were in the wrong place and reread his instructions which were very clear on WHAT actual front door it was.”
The story left people on Twitter in the lurch, and they couldn’t believe which pickle it ended up in.
One wrote: “I really appreciate that you took the time to rinse your cup. That’s the most British thing I’ve ever heard. Please tell me you made yourself a cup of tea.”
A second commented: “I would have just left the tidying up and not said a word. Can you imagine that in the morning? Waking up in a tidy house and not knowing what on earth is going on!”
Another joked, “I’d honestly be thrilled if someone broke into my house at 1am and cleaned it up and then quietly exited.”
