Emma Raducanu was forced to miss the first round of the Guadalajara Open after a tense battle with Daria Saville.

The US Open the champion, who also struggled with her condition during her second match at the Australian Open because of the blistering that contributed to her departure from Melbourne last month, has been convalescing in Mexico before withdrawing in the final set.

At 3:36, Raducanu’s game against Saville was the longest game of the year so far on the WTA Tour, and both players were visibly affected physically by the time they spent on the field.

Australia’s Saville suffered a leg cramp in the later stages of the meeting, while Raducanu emerged after time with a sling in his left leg.

Raducanu won the first set of an 80-minute marathon and took a 5-3 lead in the second, only to be broken on serve for the match when Saville leveled in a set-all.

The 19-year-old from Bromley lost 3-4 in the final set as she withdrew.

Raducanu has only played 11 level tournaments since turning pro last year but has suffered a series of physical problems that have forced her out of four tournaments.

Shortness of breath forced Raducanu out of the fourth round of Wimbledon against Ajla Tomljanovic, before she was beaten by Marta Kostyuk in the quarterfinals of the Transylvania Open due to illness.

A severe blistering on her right hand was a contributing factor in her defeat by Danka Kovinic in the second round of the Australian Open second round in January.
