Energy package could double to €70 with a one off payment

The government is considering a one-time double payment of the €35-per-month household benefit package as part of a range of cost-of-living measures to combat rising inflation.

The household benefit package will be paid out to 484,000 people and will include a free television license and €35 per month towards a recipient’s gas or electricity bill.

It is paid to everyone over the age of 70 in the country, but can only be applied for by one person per household.

Persons between the ages of 66 and 70 who draw the statutory pension or the widow’s/widower’s/partner’s pension are also entitled to claim.

Persons under the age of 66 who receive care allowance or disability allowance are also entitled to claim

The payment is €35 per month for those who can make use of it, and those who receive the benefit are also entitled to a free television license.

Government officials are considering whether double payment of the household benefit package could provide more universal support than further changes to the fuel allowance.

The household benefit package was paid to around 484,000 people in 2021, while the fuel allowance was paid to 375,000 recipients.

The number of recipients of both payments is 210,000.

Public Expenditure Secretary Michael McGrath is developing a cost-of-living package that will be announced on Budget Day and come into effect before the end of the year.

Secretary McGrath urged all departments to consider what measures he could include in the package to provide both targeted and universal financial assistance to people struggling to pay bills due to record inflation.

A key element of the package will be a set of social measures, most likely double payments of social benefits.

A double payment of all social benefits, including pensions, unemployment benefits, care allowances and disability benefits, is expected shortly after Budget Day.

In addition, there is a double payment of the so-called “Christmas bonus”, which is paid out to social welfare recipients in December.

That would mean that a pensioner with the maximum rate of €253.30 per week under the budget would receive €512.60 and the same payment again in December.

A person receiving unemployment benefit of €208 receives €416 twice a week.

The maximum weekly care rate of 224 euros would be paid twice at 448 euros if the government decides to double the premium.

A double payment of child benefit in the weeks after the budget is under discussion.

For an introduction on September 27, parents pay a one-time fee of 280 euros for one child or 560 euros for two children.

A family with three children would receive €840 if the policy is agreed by coalition partners.

A family with twins would also receive 840 euros, since they receive one and a half times the normal rate per child. Energy package could double to €70 with a one off payment
