Defenders Tyrick Mitchell and Kyle Walker-Peters are in line for their first senior England appearances and manager Gareth Southgate is urging the pair on his squad for the upcoming friendlies.
crystal palace Southampton left-back Mitchell and Walker-Peters have joined the squad after Reece James and Trent Alexander-Arnold were injured. Aaron Ramsdale and Tammy Abraham are also out of the billing with their own injuries, which means recalls for Sam Johnstone and Ollie Watkins.
Both Johnstone and Watkins were previously capped by England, while Mitchell and Walker-Peters make their first appearance in the group. England meets Switzerland on March 26 and Côte d’Ivoire three days later. Both games will take place at Wembley Stadium.
Left-back Mitchell, 22, has not represented England at any level and has only made his senior First League Debut for Palace in 2020. If he plays against Cote d’Ivoire he could face fellow club-mate Wilfried Zaha, who played twice for the Three Lions before switching international allegiances.
Walker-Peters, meanwhile, will be an option on either side of the back four, although he’s more comfortable at right-back. The 24-year-old has represented England at all levels from U18 to U21, all during his time in the books of Tottenham Hotspur, and switched to permanently southampton in the summer of 2020 after an impressive loan.
Johnstone and Watkins, meanwhile, were both in Southgate’s 33-man squad ahead of the Euro 2020 tournament, although the Aston Villa striker didn’t make the final cut. Watkins last represented his country against Hungary in October and Johnstone’s last senior cap came in a win over Andorra that same month.

Johnstone is one of three goalkeepers in the squad alongside Nick Pope and Jordan Pickford. Mitchell is one of two Palace defenders to make it and Marc Guehi has also been rewarded for his efforts.
The other defenders in the squad are Walker-Peters, Conor Coady, Harry Maguire, Tyrone Mings, Luke Shaw, John Stones and Ben White. In midfield, Southgate has selected Jude Bellingham, Conor Gallagher, Jordan Henderson, Mason Mount, Declan Rice and James Ward-Prowse.
England options in attack are Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, Raheem Sterling and the recalled Watkins. Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho of Manchester United are among the more well-known omissions, as both attended the Euros last summer Southgate says there are other players ahead of the pair this season amid difficult months for the Old Trafford couple.
