England v South Africa LIVE: Cricket result from the first test at Lord’s today as Kagiso Rabada scores five wickets today

“Stoke’s ODI retirement is England’s win in Test cricket” – Buttler

England meet South Africa on day two of the first Test at Lord’s today and the hosts start under the pump after an impressive opening session of the tourists on Tuesday.

Kagiso Rabada captured the wickets of both England’s openers, Alex Lees and the struggling Zak Crawley before towering Marco Jansen’s momentum proved too much for Joe Root. Anrich Nortje’s 90mph pace beat Jonny Bairstow for a duck and also claimed the scalps of captain Ben Stokes and wicketkeeper Ben Foakes before torrential rain ended the day’s game prematurely with England 116-6.

Much of the pre-game rhetoric had revolved around “Bazball” – England’s new attacking philosophy with which they whitewashed New Zealand and defeated India earlier in the summer – with South Africa captain Dean Elgar unresponsive to the strategy or the constant post-match questions was impressed by his team would handle it. But after day one South Africa have the upper hand and England need another comeback from a difficult position. Follow the latest result and over-by-over updates from the first test below.

England’s scorecard is not a pretty read. Only Ollie Pope surpassed 20 and hit a 102-ball 73.
