England vs Spain LIVE: Euro 2022 latest results and goal updates as Sarina Wiegman returns to the touchline

Covid-stricken Sarina Wiegman is ‘very hopeful’ of reaching the English Euros quarter-finals

Euro 2022 has reached the knockout rounds and England are first in line to try to get into the last four when they meet Spain in the quarter-finals at Brighton’s Amex Stadium. Both nations were seen as potential winners early in the competition, particularly ahead of Spain midfielder Alexia Putellas’ long-running knee injury, while Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands also remain in the knockout stages and will hope to go the distance.

In the group stage, England beat Austria, Norway and Northern Ireland without conceding a single goal, but this is where the real tests begin for Sarina Wiegman’s side. The head coach will also be back on the touchlines after recovering from Covid, although goalkeeper Hannah Hampton has now tested positive.

Spain finished second in Group B behind Germany, beating Denmark and Finland despite knowing they had to improve from that point to progress in the competition.

Follow the latest news, preparations and line-ups ahead of England vs Spain at Euro 2022 below:

England 0-0 Spain

11 mins: Closing from England.

Beth Mead is brought down with a tough tackle down the right wing and swings the resulting free kick right into the center of the box.

Ellen White times her run brilliantly and heads to the cross, but she misses the target and hits it wide. The offside flag goes up, but the replays show that White kept to the side.

England 0-0 Spain

9 minutes: Opportunity! The first corner of the game comes to Spain. England’s defense is poor as Mapi Leon catches a left footed curler which hits Patricia Guijarro near the top of the box.

Unmarked, she nods the ball back to the far post where Marta Cardona sneaks in behind Rachel Daly and pushes her effort wide!

England 0-0 Spain

6 mins Spain and England are both teams that prefer to play in possession so it will be interesting to see who controls the ball more over those 90 minutes.

Spain have the best of it in the early stages but Lucy Bronze runs decently down the right flank but fails to cross a cross before being tackled by Olga Carmona.

England 0-0 Spain

3 mins: Mary Earps is called into action early as England leave too much room down the right flank. Olga Carmona gets the ball and has enough time to float a cross to the far post.

Earps comes off her line and confidently plucks the ball out of the air but lands on Marta Cardona, who was thinking of an early goal for Spain.

Kick-off: England 0-0 Spain

Spain start their first quarter-finals of Euro 2022. Ellen White immediately drives onto the field to close Mapi Leon and gets a ball in the face for her effort.

Thankfully, she protected her arm from the worst of the blow and is back on her feet without too much trouble.

Here come the teams

It’s another sold out crowd at Amex Stadium. The lionesses are loudly cheered and applauded as they take to the field and the national anthems are played.

This should be an intriguing game but could prove to be a tricky test for England.

Wiegman is back

Sarina Wiegman is back in the dugout for England tonight after recovering from Covid-19 and she spoke to the BBC ahead of kick-off and said:

“I’m fine. It’s really nice to be here. We had two scenarios – one if I was here and one if I wasn’t. I’m glad it’s the first.

“It’s okay not to be on the ball sometimes. We like to have the ball, Spain like to have the ball. That’s their way of playing. There will be moments when they are on the ball and it’s not the moment to wrest the ball from them. We have to be patient.”

White could catch Rooney

England striker Ellen White has another opportunity to equal Wayne Rooney’s record 53 goals for England tonight.

White, joint top scorer at the 2019 World Cup, took her aggregate tally to 52 with her brace against Norway and could propel the Lionesses into the semis if she scores again tonight.

“We’re not afraid,” says Bonmati

Spain’s Aitana Bonmati claims that despite all the goals and the 100 per cent win record so far, tonight’s opponents are not afraid of England.

“It’s motivating. I’m not afraid. I don’t think my teammates are scared either,” said Bonmati.

“We know they are a good team, they are doing a lot of good things. We saw their three games in the group stage and they did very well.

“We think we can beat them, but we have to improve our style and be better than them [Saturday’s win over Denmark]. We’ve never reached the semifinals. It will be very motivating for us to play England in front of their home crowd.

“We were born to play this game. We’ll start preparing now. It was our goal [to reach the quarter-finals] and we think we can do better.”

Mead hopes to take women’s football to new heights

Beth Mead is having an excellent Euro 2022 and hopes England’s performances can raise the profile of women’s football in that country and inspire the next generation to get into the sport.

“I played part-time for Sunderland not even eight or nine years ago and I look back now and the game has taken a huge leap but I think sometimes you have to look back and think, ‘Wow, a lot has happened since then.’ ” She said.

“I think as women’s teams and women’s outfits we’ve gotten better at not being committed. We want to keep pushing.

“Yes, the game has made big leaps, but we still expect more. We still want to take it to the next level and I think that’s one thing that’s changed lately; the expectation and the expectation we have of the game.

“We want even more for it to jump to the next level and not settle for what we are given. So I think it’s really one of the big things I’ve seen in the game lately.”
