The seaside resort town of Skegness has added a touch of Sin City glamor — a neon sign that reads “Welcome to fabulous Skeg Vegas, not Nevada.”
The city has become an “Insta hotspot”, with visitors flocking to the Lincolnshire coast to pose for photos next to the replica of the famous Las Vegas attraction.
The 8m high and 6m wide Skegness version took over a year to design and manufacture before being erected last month.
Like the 1959 America original, it’s outside of town – outside of Skegness Stockcar Racing Stadium.
Skegness Raceway Chiefs said: “In light of the trying times we are in, we have decided to put a smile on everyone’s face and give back to the community, oh, and light up the skies too. The sign is an exact replica of the Las Vegas sign.”
It was made by RD Signs of Sheffield and is said to have cost £36,000. Boss Nigel Spooner told The Mirror: “It’s causing quite a stir.
“We knew from the start it was going to be a milestone.”
It’s proving to be a hit with locals and tourists alike. Gogglebox star Izzi Warner, who posed alongside for a snap, said unlike the Vegas version, she didn’t have to queue for a photo.
Previous attempts to promote the town include artist John Hassall’s famous 1908 Jolly Fisherman poster that read: “Skegness is so bracing!”
