Enock Mwepu from Brighton is retiring due to a heart condition

The 24-year-old was diagnosed with a hereditary heart defect.

Club chairman Tony Bloom said: “We are all absolutely devastated for Enock.

“He and his family had a traumatic couple of weeks and while we’re just grateful he got through it, he’s seen such a promising career cut short at such a young age.

“As a club we will give him all the love, help and support we can to help him make a full recovery and then as he decides the next steps in his life.”

A club statement said: “The condition, which can worsen over time, would put Enock at an extremely high risk of suffering a potentially fatal cardiac event if he continued to play competitive football.”

Mwepu fell ill in Mali on a recent trip for Zambia and spent several nights in hospital in Bamako.

When he returned to England he continued to be cared for.

A strong and intelligent midfielder, he scored Albion’s goal of the season with a long-range shot at Liverpool last season.
