A feud has erupted in a suburb after a neighbor raised the Russian flag in support of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
Student Izabelle Stevens, 20, initially thought the red, white and blue flag being erected along her street in British Columbia, Canada, was a coincidence and turned the other cheek.
However, she later decided to check the man’s social media – and believes the content he shared proves he supports Putin’s war.
After watching the horrific events in Ukraine from the safety of her home, Izabelle felt compelled to take action. Yahoo Australia reports.
She has posted videos on TikTok detailing the suburban spit, which has now racked up more than two million views.
Izabelle said the clip also sparked a community effort to take a stand against the man’s misguided support.
She told Yahoo: “First I could say that all the neighbors in my area were really shocked, but none of us really did anything.
“We tried to keep the peace and be positive.
“It’s kind of a Canadian thing where you don’t really want to start problems with your neighbor and you want to be friendly.”
Izabelle said she decided to take a stand when she saw a visiting maintenance worker visibly upset at the flag.
She felt that her neighbor waving the flag was seen as representing the whole street.
In a video posted to TikTok in early April, Izabelle says the “only sensible” response was to raise the Ukrainian flag.
In just a few days, Izabelle said she noticed other neighbors putting up flagpoles and raising the same blue and yellow flag.
She said one of her neighbors, who was vacationing in Mexico at the time, texted another neighbor asking him to take down the Canadian flag in exchange for a Ukrainian flag.
Izabelle said: “So we slowly started surrounding him (with Ukrainian flags).”
In a disturbing escalation, the pro-Russian neighbor then erected a 20-foot flagpole with an obscure red and yellow flag, which she says has been linked to a Russian far-right hate group.
Izabelle said she confronted the neighbor about the flag but he said he didn’t know its meaning and removed it.
The 20-year-old said social media attention has meant the street has become a tourist spot, with people flocking to the area just to see the flags.
