Russia used the potential vacuum bomb During the invasion of Ukraine, Oksana Markarova, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, told reporters Monday night after a meeting with US lawmakers.
Vacuum bombs, also known as thermobaric weapons, work by taking in oxygen to create powerful, high-temperature explosions. If used in a civilian context, such an attack could constitute a war crime.
“They used vacuum bombs today,” says Markarova.
Sumy regional administrative director Dmytro Zhyvytskyy said on his Telegram channel that the bomb destroyed a Ukrainian army base in the town of Okhtyrka, in the northeastern part of the country, killing 70 soldiers. Ukrainian media witnessed videotapes of the explosion, timestamped at 5:32 p.m. on Monday.
In Washington, the White House said it had not independently verified the cases.
“I don’t have any confirmation of that,” White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said. “We looked at the reports. If that is true, it is likely a war crime.”
