Epidemiologist says sub-variant of Omicron is almost as infectious as measles

A leading epidemiologist has warned that the new Omicron sub-variant is almost as infectious as measles, one of the most contagious diseases in human history.

His new variant – named deltacron – which combines mutations from both Omicron and Delta has been detected in several areas of France and it is thought to have circulated among the population since January.

Professor Adrian Esterman, former epidemiologist of the World Health Organization (WHO), says ABC News, that although the new sub-variant is no more severe than Omicron, it is more contagious. “That means we’re going to see a spike in the number of cases,” he said.

On his Twitter account, he added: “Omicron BA.2 is about 1.4 times more infectious than BA.1. The fundamental reproduction number (R0) for BA.1 is about 8.2, making R0 for BA.2 to be about 12.

“This makes it pretty close to measles, the most contagious disease we know of.”

So far, only a small number of cases of the new variant have been identified, and it remains unclear how the vaccine will protect against it.

Soumya Swaminathan, principal scientist at the World Health Organization, tweeted on Tuesday: “We already know that recombination events can occur, in humans or animals, with multiple circulating variants. of #SARSCoV2.

“It is necessary to wait for experiments to determine the character of this virus. The importance of rapid sequencing, analysis and data sharing as we deal with this pandemic. ”

And WHO Covid-19 technical lead Maria van Kerkhove said on Twitter that her team is “monitoring and discussing” the new variant.

Asked on Friday night if he had any concerns about the deltacron variant, UK Health Secretary Sajid Javid said: “There are variations that we will obviously continue to look at.

“The most recent concern is Omicron but we have successfully navigated our way through that as a country thanks to the response of the British people.

“There are also so-called subvariables of Omicron and we are not interested in any of those at this critical time.

“We keep it under review but we’re not concerned at all.”
