former Manchester United flop Eric Djemba Djemba warned his old club about it Eric ten Hag is the wrong man to be successful Ralph Rangnik – and has urged United to appoint an ‘English manager’ instead.

Rangnick was handed the reins on a transitional basis back in November to allow the club to conduct a thorough recruitment process and Ten Hag has now done so emerged as the big favourite for the role following his excellent work at Ajax. The 52-year-old has guided the Dutch giants to five trophies in his four years at the helm in Amsterdam, with the club currently on course to win their third Eredivisie title under Ten Hag.

But Djemba-Djemba – who spent two years on United’s books between 2005 and 2007 – doesn’t think Ten Hag is the right man to change things at Manchester United. He told Sky Sports: “You need a good manager, a manager who knows English football, a manager who knows English players. This is very important. I can’t name managers because I’m not on the board, I don’t know what the board wants to do. For me though, they must have an English manager or a British manager.”

Despite Djemba-Djemba’s verdict, it’s unlikely the United hierarchy will change their minds about Ten Hag. The Ajax boss has held his own against stiff competition from the likes of Ajax Maurice Pochettino and Luis Enrique in the running for the top job at Old Trafford.

And while nothing has been officially announced, things are expected to move quickly once the national season in Holland is over. Ten Hag and Ajax fell out of last weekend’s Dutch Cup final, beating PSV Eindhoven 2-1.

Ajax still hold a slender four-point lead over PSV in the league as the two sides vie for the Eredivisie title with just a handful of games remaining. but Gary Neville expects United to push through appointment after embarrassing United Liverpool on Thursday evening – unrelated to Ajax and their pursuit of the Dutch title.

Eric Djemba-Djemba has urged Manchester United to snub Ten Hag in favor of an ‘English manager’

United performed poorly at Anfield where they were beaten 4-0 by their old rivals. Mohammed Salah bagged a brace to end his recent mini drought while Luis Diaz and sadio mane were also on course to doom United to another tough defeat – just months after they were beaten 5-0 at Old Trafford Jurgen Klopps wild reds.

And Neville insists the United hierarchy will seek to hasten Ten Hag’s announcement in a “political” move to try and divert focus from their recent sobering league defeat.

Neville told Sky Sports: “The pace at which Manchester United want to get Ten Hag out as soon as possible is to take the pressure and the eye off of everything that’s currently going on at the football club. It’s an old political tactic. They can’t wait to appoint him because it immediately shifts the focus to next season.”
