Manchester United have committed a “mortal sin” according to leading candidate Erik ten Hag, who declared he would do things differently if he were in charge of the club
Erik ten Hag could be the top candidate to become the newcomer Manchester United managers, but the Dutchman once accused them of having committed a “mortal sin”.
The 52-year-old appears to be closing in on the job at United after being interviewed for the role on Monday as bosses look to appoint their future manager as soon as possible. Ralph Rangnik helped temporarily Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was released last year.
However, Rangnick is expected to take on an adviser role when his contract expires on June 1, meaning United must act to secure their long-term future. Ten Hag are now the front runners but previously disagreed with the club’s decision making.
Ten Hag isn’t one to keep his opinions to himself and the Dutchman accused United of committing a ‘mortal sin’ after signing Donny van de Beek from Ajax. It was Ten Hag who sold the midfielder to United in 2020 but he has hardly played for the Red Devils since the £40m move.
Van de Beek was one of Ajax’s best players but has now joined them everton loaned out in search of first team football. Some have even suggested that United prioritize Ten Hag so they get the most out of Van de Beek from midfield.
Ten Hag was angered that things hadn’t worked out for Van de Beek under two separate managers at United with neither Solskjaer nor Rangnick making him a regular starter. The 52-year-old said to de Volkskrant in December: “Donny, I find that hard. [It’s a] Mortal sin.
“If you haven’t had a chance yet, then development will also falter. Every once in a while you spur them on.” But if Ten Hag is appointed, he may be the best man to follow his own advice.
Van De Beek initially joined United following his move to United real Madrid collapsed but his career in England was a metaphor for his failed transfer. The Dutchman has barely had a look-in since 2020 and finally got his loan move after trying to leave in the summer.
United’s next manager could very much define Van de Beek’s future at the club, with Mauricio Pochettino also a front-runner alongside Ten Hag. The most popular choice seems to be the current Ajax boss but Pochettino has already done so First League Experience.
MY MESSAGE: Should Manchester United appoint Erik Ten Hag next summer? Comment below.
Pochettino has already done both southampton and Tottenhamand even faced Ten Hag’s Ajax side Champions League Semi-finals in 2019. Pochettino edged out his managerial rivals back then, but Ten Hag could have the last laugh next summer.
The Argentine is expected to lose his job at PSG after failing to inspire Champions League success as European glory continues to elude the French giants. And Pochettino has been living off a hotel since taking the job as his family is still based in London.
Whoever is appointed, United are expected to act soon as they want to give their next boss as much notice as possible ahead of next summer. And the Red Devils will be desperate to get their pre-season preparations right after a disastrous season.
