Erik ten Hag is reportedly looking to add Mitchell van der Gaag, his assistant at Ajax, to his Manchester United managerial ticket.
en Hag has reportedly taken a big step towards becoming the next United manager after reaching an agreement in principle with the club.
Ten Hag, 52, has been in charge at Dutch giants Ajax since December 2017 but has been repeatedly linked with United’s hot seat this summer, with Ralf Rangnick set to move into an adviser role.
According to The Athletic, Van der Gaag is expected to join Ten Hag at Old Trafford in the summer.
Van der Gaag joined Ten Hag last summer at the first team level, having previously worked with the Ajax reserve. The 50-year-old has also previously managed Maritimo and Belenenses in Portugal, guiding the latter to the top flight, as well as Dutch clubs SBV Excelsior and NAC Breda.
Paris St Germain head coach Mauricio Pochettino was also on United’s wish list but Athletic have reported that Ten Hag has verbally agreed to take over as interim boss Rangnick at the end of the season.
However, it is understood that while United’s search for a new manager is at an advanced stage, no agreement has been reached with any candidate and the process is ongoing.
Rangnick agreed to temporarily take charge of United last November following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The club will miss out on the Champions League next season as they are three places and six points behind fourth-placed Tottenham in the Premier League with seven games remaining of the season.
But that doesn’t seem to have been an obstacle to landing another outstanding European manager, as Ten Hag twice won the Eredivisie and the Dutch Cup while guiding Ajax to the 2019 Champions League semi-finals.
Ajax are on course for another domestic double – four points clear of second-placed PSV Eindhoven and set to meet their rivals in this weekend’s Dutch Cup final.
