Manchester United are closing in on Erik ten Hag from Ajax which would see him reunite with compatriot Donny van de Beek who has struggled for minutes since moving to Old Trafford
Donny van de Beek could be handed one Manchester United Lifeline when Erik ten Hag is appointed as the next boss.
The Ajax boss has long been among the favorites for the role and appears to be close to a move to the Premier League. Talks about his compensation package are ongoing as the Red Devils look to finalize their manager search in the coming weeks before summer.
Ten Hag will have quite a to-do list when he takes charge and decides which players keep and who let go will be a huge job. Several players are struggling with the lack of minutes in Manchester’s red half – one of them is Van de Beek, who signed from Ajax almost two years ago.
Van de Beek was a fixture at Ajax as they made it to the last four Champions League in 2019. Ten Hag led this run, using his compatriot in a variety of roles. The sun understands the 24-year-old, who has been forced to leave on loan, will be part of the first-team picture under the potential new manager.
Ten Hag and the multifaceted star worked together for more than three years and developed a close relationship. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was the man in charge when United spent £40million to sign Van de Beek but it was quickly realized minutes would be precious. The Dutchman plays a role similar to Talisman Bruno Fernandes, which saw him struggle for starts.
Solskjaer and the club vetoed a summer move because he would be given more minutes but that never materialized. Before leaving for Goodison Park, Van de Beek waited for one more First League begin, with all eight of his excursions coming as a submarine.
Should Van de Beek be a Man Utd regular? Let us know in the comments
There’s no doubt Ten Hag is a fan of the United outcast. Van de Beek played 94 times in all competitions in the last two years in the Netherlands. Before leaving, the 52-year-old said: “Donny has become an absolute star for us. He has developed into a modern midfielder, with depth, goals and strong transitions at both ends.”
Since moving to everton Van de Beek has played six times but quickly made an impression on Frank Lampard despite the Toffees’ problems. He said: “I’m really impressed. On a professional level, since I’ve spoken to him and I’ve come and seen him train and play, I’ve been absolutely impressed with his fitness, his sharpness.”
Ten Hag may have to deal with several other players struggling with their lack of playing time as an Old Trafford exit is reportedly being sought. Dean Henderson, Eric Bailly and Anthony Martial have all been used sparingly and will no doubt seek clarity on their futures.
