The Norwegian striker fueled speculation about a La Liga transfer in January as he confirmed that he would like to play in Spain during his career.
Barca president Joan Laporta’s alleged confidence in signing the striker has sparked something was described as a ‘war’ between the club and El Clasico Madrid rivals.
In January, claimed the Norwegian striker that Borussia Dortmund was urging him to make a decision about his future amid speculation he could move this summer.
Haaland has a reported £63m release clause that comes into effect this summer – a factor that will spark interest in the Norwegian from a number of elite European clubs.
However, the Norwegian striker’s comments suggest that Spain is his preferred destination and Barca are now hoping to ensure Camp Nou is his destination rather than the Spanish capital.
Xavi told reporters during a press conference on Saturday when asked about his meeting with Haaland: “I can’t give any details. The only thing I can say about Haaland is that we work for Barca now and in the future.”
“If we announce something, you will know. Like yesterday with (the youthful midfielder) Pablo Torre.”
The Barca boss was then pressured over whether Haaland and Kylian Mbappe could join La Liga – the latter is said to be on the verge of joining Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent.
Xavi replied: “Of course, the more players at that level, the better La Liga would improve. Obviously, it would be even more attractive.”
The 21-year-old’s world-class status is unquestionable as he has scored 80 goals in just 79 games for Dortmund since joining from Red Bull Salzburg two years ago – including 23 times in 20 games this season.
Haaland has continued to break multiple goal records, scoring 27 goals in 25 games in his appearances in European competitions.
In the 2020/21 season, Haaland was an integral part of Dortmund’s DFB Cup victory, winning the Bundesliga Player of the Season award and becoming top scorer of the season Champions League.
