Pep Guardiola discusses Erling Haaland transfer rumour

Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch has admitted he has some tactical concerns about Erling Haaland’s planned move to Manchester City in the upcoming transfer window.

Haaland has been touted with a move from current club Borussia Dortmund for quite some time, with a long list of potential suitors including almost every big club on the continent. After a long saga, City – the former club of the striker’s father Alf-Inge – appear to have struck a deal for the Norwegian superstar.

Confirmation of the move could come as soon as this week if City make a mark for Liverpool and Co. that they will be even stronger next season with Haaland at the forefront. Personal terms were agreed between the player and City last month.

Relations between the two clubs are still solid after the initial contact and the top of Dortmund’s hierarchy expect to be informed of City’s intention to activate Haaland’s release clause very soon. Barring later obstacles, the 21-year-old is widely expected to ply his trade at the Etihad from next season.

While news of the upcoming deal has likely caused a great deal of excitement among City believers, not everyone is certain the move will bring instant success. A man who knows Haaland very well is Leeds manager Marsch from their time together at RB Salzburg.

When asked what he thought of the move, the American manager said: “I wish he would come back here to Leeds – this is his birthplace – but I understand the decision for him to go to Man City. It will be interesting .”

Marsch went on to make an interesting point about a possible contrast in playing style when it comes to the setup that gets the best out of Haaland. City manager Pep Guardiola is famous for his possession-focused approach, while the Norwegian star’s blistering pace and physical traits make him a nightmare for opposing defenders on the break.

The Leeds manager said as much when he claimed: “He’s an explosive switcher and Man City play a lot with possession.” City have at times played without a recognized forward this season and are still three points clear at the top with three games to go.

In a season that was at times marred by injuries for the young forward, Haaland nonetheless ended the Bundesliga season with an impressive return of 21 goals in 23 games.
