ET’s Oscar-winning costume designer reflects on that Halloween scene and creates a timeless classic [Exclusive Interview]

So your career is obviously huge. You did so much that affected my life and the lives of others. I’ve been wondering about all the icons in your career – from ET to Elliott’s hoodie, Marty McFly, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” which is the best Spider-Man costume –

Thank you. I think so, too. We’ve gone back to the basics. Those are absolutely the basics. We go back to the classic, basic story, “That’s Spider-Man, and that’s what he should be.”

Are you going after the image and trying to find an iconic element of each character to highlight? Or is it just a coincidence that it came out that way?

I think it’s mostly coincidental. The ability to really fit into the moment and the personality, that’s where you have the opportunity to establish that later. It’s like a native part of the movie, the collective unconscious, if you will. And that little red hoodie, it’s striking, isn’t it? I know my daughter went to a movie screening at Hollywood Forever Cemetery and everyone was wearing red hoodies. So it’s very satisfying. It’s really, really nice when that happens.

I think honestly, for me, one of my favorite outfits in the movie was when Henry first went out in the backyard, and he was wearing the little thermos, the little fur coat. and her socks. All of that, I’ve tried to pick – again, in line with this Norman Rockwell, so popular, right in Americana’s pocket – items that can be had for generations. Thermal underwear, they’ve been around for decades and decades. So things like that, to choose these things are very purposeful. They’re not too fashion-forward or generation-specific. And you can see that, little overalls, things like that, have been going on for decades over generations. So I think that’s one of the things that keeps it focused and on track.
