The head of the EU’s border protection agency, Fabrice Leggeri, is resigning after the release of the first results of a long-running investigation by the EU’s anti-fraud agency into wrongdoing at the agency, according to several people familiar with the matter.

Leggeri has headed the Frontex agency since 2015. In recent years, Frontex has come under scrutiny for its alleged role in the illegal deportation of migrants at EU borders, a practice known as pushbacks. Frontex has also faced allegations of harassment and misconduct within the agency itself.

The EU anti-fraud agency OLAF has been investigating the allegations for over a year and is now preparing its final conclusions.

An EU official said Leggeri was not the only top official involved in the report to resign.

Frontex has not yet responded to a request for comment.
