EU sanctions major Russian oligarchs – POLITICO

European Union today 26 more people to its punishment list imposed on Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, including some of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s closest confidants and some of the country’s most senior oligarchs.

Among those sanctioned is Igor Sechin, CEO of state oil company Rosneft and a former deputy head of Putin’s administration, who has worked with the Russian leader since the 1990s.

The sanctions list also includes Nikolay Tokarev, CEO of Transneft, a state-controlled pipeline transport company, and Gennady Timchenko, founder and main shareholder of the Volga Group, which invests in energy, transportation and infrastructure assets.

The list also includes billionaire Alisher Usmanov as well as Mikhail Fridman and Petr Aven, shareholders of Alfa Group, one of Russia’s largest private investment groups.

At the same time, the EU is targeting several government ministers, including Transport Minister Vitaly Savelyev.

Putin’s personal press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, is on the list – along with a number of journalists whom the EU has accused of conducting anti-Ukrainian propaganda.

The press secretary “actively supports actions or policies that undermine or threaten Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence, as well as stability and security in Ukraine,” the statement said. EU said.
