Europa League recap: West Ham denied as Eintracht set final date with Rangers

Eintracht Frankfurt defeated ten-man West Ham United 1-0 in Thursday’s Europa League semi-final second leg to reach a European final for the first time in 42 years with a 3-1 aggregate victory.

In front of a deafening 48,000 spectators, Rafael Borre struck the 26th-minute winner for the hosts, beating the English club for the second time after a 2-1 win in the first leg last week.

West Ham, who played most of the game with 10 men after left-back Aaron Cresswell was sent off in the 17th minute for a professional foul on Jens Petter Hauge, were toothless throughout.

Their manager David Moyes was also sent off in the 79th minute for angrily kicking a ball in a frustrating and rough end to West Ham’s European run this season.

Germany, who last reached a European final in 1980, meet Rangers on May 18 after Scotland beat RB Leipzig.

John Lundstram scored with 10 minutes remaining to give Rangers a 3-1 win after a seesaw saw on a rocking Ibrox.

Goals from James Tavernier, Glen Kamara and Lundstram secured Rangers a place in the final for the first time since 2008, where they meet Eintracht Frankfurt in a bid to lift their second European trophy in 50 years, following the 1972 trophy.

Captain Tavernier opened the scoring in the 18th minute and became the Europa League’s top scorer of the season with his seventh goal, before midfielder Kamara extended the lead with a long-range shot six minutes later.

Leipzig, who won the first leg 1-0, hit back when striker Christopher Nkunku received a perfect cross from Angelino to score in the 70th minute, but Rangers clinched the decisive goal when a defensive mistake followed a corner it enabled Lundstram to sweep the ball home.
