The pieces are coming together for Europe’s fifth Legloand theme park to be built in Belgium.
Our parks are already in Denmark, Germany, Italy and Great Britain.
On Tuesday 30th August, Merlin Entertainments Group signed a memorandum of understanding with the Belgian authorities for plans to build the new park, which is expected to be the seventh Legoland in the world.
The company plans to build the theme park on a disused industrial site in Gosselies, near Charleroi Airport, about an hour south of Brussels by train.
The site was used for the construction of heavy construction machinery for the global company Caterpillar.
A 70-acre park is set to open in 2027 and will be larger than the 61-acre resort in Windsor, just outside London, if the plan doesn’t encounter roadblocks.
In Charleroi, another 20 hectares will be reserved for future expansion or development.
The newest park would be easily accessible for Lego fans in Ireland, with direct Ryanair flights from Dublin to Charleroi. Aer Lingus flies to Brussels Airport, about an hour away.
There is also a direct Eurostar service from London to Brussels and direct flights from UK airports such as Edinburgh, Liverpool and Manchester to Charleroi Airport.
The project is expected to cost around €400m/€463m and is likely to have a hotel on site.
It’s believed the new website could be the missing piece for Lego fans living in France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
John Jakobsen, Merlin’s Chief Operating Officer for Legoland Resorts Group, described the new park as “another exciting ‘building block’ laid to bring a potential Legoland Resort to the many Lego fans in Wallonia, Benelux and Northern France”.
Willy Borsus, Wallonia’s economy minister, said it was hoped the new park would create around 1,000 new jobs in the region and “rehabilitate our brownfield sites”.
Legoland Billund in Denmark was the first to open in 1968. Legoland Windsor followed in 1996, Legoland Günzburg in Germany in 2002 and the Legoland water park in Gardaland, Italy, in 2021.
In the US, Legoland Florida has been open since 2011 and another park opened in New York last year.
