Oscar-winning filmmaker Sir Sam Mendes’ upcoming project Empire Of Light will have its European premiere at this year’s BFI London Film Festival.
His film – which marks Mendes’ first foray into solo writing and will star Olivia Colman, Michael Ward and Colin Firth – will be showing this year’s American Express Gala.
Set in an old movie theater in an English seaside town in the early 1980s, the film explores human connection and romance.
Mendes said: “I am really excited to be participating in this year’s BFI London Film Festival as a screening of the AMEX Gala.
“Empire Of Light is a very personal film for me and I can’t wait to show it at home.”
The filmmaker directed the project and also produced it alongside Pippa Harris from Neal Street Productions, in partnership with Searchlight Pictures.
The cast also includes Toby Jones, Tanya Moodie, Tom Brooke and Crystal Clarke.
BFI London Film Festival Director Tricia Tuttle said: “When I read that Sam Mendes’ next project revolves around a cinema, I was very excited about the possibility of being able to present it at the BFI Film Festival. London.
“Mendes is a master storyteller and here vividly captures the feeling of the south coast of England, in the 1980s.
“Empire Of Light explores the importance of community, the power of storytelling and of films, especially the thrill of watching a movie in a dark theater and the tactile pleasures of celluloid.
