There is strong support for Ukraine joining the European Union in several major EU countries, although Europeans still do not believe it will happen immediately, according to poll results. over six countries are shared exclusively with POLITICO.

As European governments scrambled to respond to Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine last month, Euroskopia, a group of European polling firms, asked people in Spain, Germany, and Greece. , France, the Netherlands and Italy that they think of the Russian attack.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has declared Ukraine part of the EU, although she has no right to recognize Ukraine or even propose it as a candidate for membership. Such decisions must be agreed upon by all 27 member states of the bloc – and they have clearly disagreed in recent years over EU enlargement.

Central European leaders tend to be the most supportive of Ukraine’s accession to the bloc. Presidents of Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia last month call on the EU to give Ukraine “The highest political support” and “allows EU institutions to take steps to immediately grant Ukraine EU candidate state status and open up the negotiation process.”

While most respondents to the Euroskopia poll were sympathetic to Ukraine, 17% across all six countries said the invasion was “acceptable” or “unacceptable but understandable”. Okay.” However, attitudes vary considerably by country, with more than a third of respondents in Greece saying they can understand Putin’s actions, compared with just 10% in the Netherlands.

It is clear to respondents that war poses a danger to their own countries, with 57% of the six respondents saying that they think their country is “very much” or “somewhat” in danger. In Italy and the Netherlands, the rates are 63% and 60%, respectively.

There is also much disagreement about the need for the EU to set up its own militaries so that countries do not depend on NATO. Sixty-three percent of respondents in Greece support the idea, compared with only 27 percent in the Netherlands. There was also strong support in France and Spain, 51% each, but greater opposition in Germany and Italy, with 36 and 35% respectively.

The poll, conducted March 8-11, gathered the opinions of 1,000 adults in each country.
