EU’s Borrell says Iran nuclear deal is very close – POLITICO

A nuclear deal with Iran is about to be signed, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Saturday.

Speaking at the Doha Forum international conference, the top EU diplomat said: “Now we are very close to an agreement and I hope it will be possible.” Reuters reported.

Negotiations are underway to revive a 2015 deal that would see Tehran abandon its ambitions to develop nuclear weapons in exchange for the lifting of US sanctions on its economy.

A deal would also return Iranian crude to global energy markets in the coming months, helping to offset market turmoil and price spikes in the wake of sweeping sanctions on Russia’s economy following the invasion of Ukraine.

Russia had made last-minute demands regarding the deal, which some experts say were aimed at preventing markets from stabilizing by restoring Iran’s oil exports.

EU diplomats will meet their Iranian counterparts later on Saturday to discuss the progress of the deal. EU's Borrell says Iran nuclear deal is very close - POLITICO
