Evan Ferguson suffers with the Republic of Ireland in a penalty shootout

Evan Ferguson suffered a cruel defeat with the Republic of Ireland.

The teenage Albion striker and his colleagues missed out on a place at the finals of the European Under-21 Championship after being beaten by Israel on penalties.

Jim Crawford’s side had hoped to qualify for the tournament for the first time but were defeated on penalties after a goalless draw in Tel Aviv 3–1, meaning their play-off ended 1–1 on aggregate.

Tyreik Wright, Ferguson and Dawson Devoy all failed to score on penalties at Bloomfield Stadium.

Ferguson saw his effort saved when he went to the centre.

He had gone on as a substitute after a minor ankle problem was reported following the first leg in which he scored.

Israel entered the game as favorites after calling up Celtic senior Liel Abada, Maccabi Netanya midfielder Eden Karzev and Olympiacos defender Doron Leidner.

All three, who played Albania in the Nations League on Saturday, started the winner’s clash.
