EVE Online’s CEO says NFTs are “not for rest” in a statement and rules out NFTs in live play

A growing concern in the EVE Online community was whether or not CCP Games would embrace NFTs and blockchain technology as EVE enters its third decade of existence. CCP’s Hilmar Veigar Pétursson released a statement assuring fans that NFTs will not be coming to the game any time soon.

EVE Online has dabbled in NFTs, but not in a way that affects the core game. Instead, the team at CCP Games took killmails from the last Alliance Tournament and coined them as NFTs for the participants. It was the start of a bad trajectory for many capsuleers who feared CCP Games would bring them into the main experience.

This was only exacerbated when an image circulated of Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of CCP Games, attending a meeting with NFT teams at GDC.

However, in today’s post, Pétursson responded to the concerns in the community and spoke about the company’s position on NFTs and how they relate to life EVE Online Experience. The statement states that while NFT will not be performing at Tranquility, they will be performing live EVE Online Gameserver, CCP will continue to explore the possibilities outside of the game.

“While we remain fascinated by the technology, to us NFT stands for ‘Not for Tranquility’. Overall, the EVE IP will continue to push the boundaries of digital economies and virtual worlds – and we will explore this outside of TQ as well. “

Blockchain and its use in games has also intrigued many studios, including CCP Games. We’ve spoken to the studio in the past about how the team views the technology and how it can be used to help EVE into the future. Hilmar also addressed this, stating that the technology has “untapped potential” and needs “a lot of work” before it can even be implemented in a game EVE Online.

“Many of us at CCP have been following the new frontiers that have been developing around blockchains and cryptocurrencies in recent years. We’ve read your feedback, and we see what you’re seeing too – blockchain technology has both a lot of untapped potential and a lot of work to do before it’s ready for EVE-scale gaming.

With that in mind, we have no plans to add blockchain technology to EVE Online’s Tranquility global server any time soon. In the coming years, Tranquility’s development will focus on building exciting new opportunities on the solid foundation laid over the past two decades.”

It’s probably CCP Games’ strongest statement on blockchain and NFTs yet, and helps explain the thought process behind the studio’s approach to the new technology. You can see the full statement on the EVE Online Website.
