Everton are in talks with Jordan Pickford over a new contract and Frank Lampard believes the England goalkeeper could dedicate his future to the club next month.
Pickford has two years left on the contract he signed in 2018 and Lampard is keen to keep a player whose saves were crucial in keeping Everton going last season.
His immediate priority is to sign a striker and a midfielder but he believes a deal with Pickford could be agreed quickly.
He said: “The club is speaking to Jordan. He’s a great player for us, everyone wants him to stay and Jordan is very happy here. Maybe it’s one for the window craziness to close in a couple of weeks and in the cold dull daylight we can get it done very quickly.”
Lampard is keen to keep Chelsea target Anthony Gordon and insisted the situation with the winger is different to his own move from West Ham to Stamford Bridge in 2001.
“I was in the West Ham first-team for four years,” he said. “I got in when I was 17 and left when I was 21-22. So no direct comparison. I’m not being silly, I know players can be ambitious, Chelsea are a club that will always get in my bones because of what they’ve done for my career and how I feel about the fans and how I feel about it I have great respect and appreciation for that.
“But while I’m working for Everton and feeling the passion of this club and what this club has done for individuals and what individuals can do for this club, it’s my job to keep that closest at the moment, so when I have those in talks I think what’s best for Everton, what’s best for me and my job.”
A theme of Lampard’s management at Chelsea has been his desire to develop the youth and now they want to take Everton’s best candidate, adding: “At Chelsea I brought a lot of young players into the team and now they want one of my young players take . Maybe there’s an irony in that. But I think it’s understandable that people are interested in players like that, that’s the way the world works.”
Lampard is not concerned his reluctance to sell Gordon could hurt Everton’s chances of loaning a Chelsea player – possibly striker Armando Broja – on loan.
“I think they’re separate conversations,” he explained. “I know the Chelsea players very well. I have one loan left for the UK and we’re not just looking for Chelsea in the area.”
Dele Alli, who is wanted by Besiktas, has yet to go to Turkey and is included in the Everton squad for Saturday’s game against Nottingham Forest.
